Big Island police are helping keiki in need.

After a hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hawaiʻi Police Department is once again participating with Hope Services Hawaiʻi for an islandwide backpack drive for students in need. New and unused backpacks can be dropped off at any Big Island police station now through July 31.

Police have partnered with Hope Services since 2008 collecting school backpacks for children who cannot afford them.

“Backpacks are the most requested non-food item by charities in Hawaiʻi,” a media release from HPD said. “The donated backpacks will be distributed to children at women’s shelters, homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities around the island. Your contribution to help a child in need is greatly appreciated.”
