Big Island – January 23, 2015 – Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii partnered with Hope Services to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.Day Monday with service projects at the Ulu Wini transitional housing off Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona.

Volunteers, including 26 U.S. Marine Corps members, 30 neighborhood children, 10 community volunteers, and four AmeriCorps members, painted stairwells and community garden boxes. Volunteers also hung drywall in Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii’s new ReStore and office building. Through this new space, Habitat plans to offer training to the Ulu Wini community as well as sell discounted furniture and building supplies to the public.

Neighborhood youth did arts and crafts and held discussions about discrimination and creating a more peaceful community in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
